A statutory service for Lancashire with the responsibility for assessing all Young Carers across the County

We support young carers under the age of 18 who provide regular, ongoing care and emotional support to a family member who has a disability, a long-term condition (physical or mental wellbeing) or misuse alcohol and/or drugs.

Support Criteria

  • The child/young person must be a young carer; therefore, they are helping to care for a person who is ill, has a disability, is experiencing mental health distress, or is misusing alcohol / drugs and carrying out tasks above and beyond what a child their age would be expected to do.
  • Their caring responsibilities are in some way impacting on their lives, this may be socially, educationally, physically or emotionally. Not all Young Carers need support and many cope perfectly well without support from external agencies.
  • The child/young person must be aged between 5 and 17 years old and live within Lancashire (excluding Blackpool & Blackburn with Darwen) We are commissioned through Lancashire County Council and NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board as a statutory service for Lancashire with the responsibility for assessing all Young Carers across the County.

From the young carers assessment, we can identify any support needs and offer the following support

  • Support for the young carer with safety planning and/or first aid session
  • Support for the young carer with tips and techniques for wellbeing
  • Support for the young carer's school/college to be young carer aware
  • Support for the young carer to understand their cared for person's condition
  • Support for the young carer with cooking skills
  • Support for the young carer by ensuring the whole family has the right support in place by signposting to appropriate agencies.
